DP "Eye for an Eye" Review...FINALLY!
GAH. I finally reviewed this episode. Now I got like 16 bajillion more to go...Any who, enjoy. You can also read this in my DA journal and website.
NEO YI’s REVIEW: I give thanks to DP fans who were kind enough to get me a copy of the English version of “Eye for an Eye” (till then, I had to resort to the Spanish version, even if I could basically make out what the dealio was happening). God only knows there’s a complete wave of fan wankering going on with the recent new DP episodes airing in Latin America and Canada before the US. I know I’ve done my share, but in my case, I haven'thad cable TV in months, so I’m just happy whenever I see a DP episode somewhere in the internet. Ahh, the Internet is NOT just for porn.
This episode is rather interesting on the Vlad/Danny front since it comes right after “Kindred Spirits”. Getting serious and ignoring my lust for Vlad/Danny (Yeah, I know, I like the father/son relationship between the two has well, but hey, it’s not a crime to expand my territory, is it?), the relationship the two share turns from battle into complete war at this point. “Kindred Spirits” is what I believe to be the turning point in Vlad’s life as I felt this is him at his absolute MOST desperate in his then current plans to achieve Danny as his son, the one thing he wants more then anything in his entire life, so much so that he desperately creates the perfect clone that would satisfy him enough that he would willingly discard the real thing. Before "KS", Vlad never had any intentions of wanting to kill Danny, so this was a huge step for the man. Obviously that plan backfired and we the fans were left wondering just where the Vlad/Danny-ness goes from there.
Enter this episode where we get our answers. Danny starts off with pranks and Vlad joins in, eventually landing him as mayor and further torturing the poor boy’s life. Granted, while this was merely just to get back at the kid, you can notice that throughout the entirety of this episode, Vlad makes not ONE mention of wanting Danny as his son. Nope, not even a hint. And while this may please the Vlad/Danny fans (so they can further pair the two up without THAT hanging over their heads), it speaks volume on the level of respect and disrespect the two have shared. Vlad further criticizes Danny’s behavior and states he had this coming with heated words. Vlad is clearly frustrated from the pranks Danny pulled on him, but it’s plain as hell he’s angry to boot. At this point, Vlad is already mayor, already subjected Danny and his pals to laws that torment the kid, and Danny himself goes up to apologize, opening a gateway to end this ridiculous feud. Vlad has won and it’s clear if he had just taken that handshake, the whole mess would have cleared and things could go back to normal, but he didn’t. It’s possible that his uprooted anger could be the aftermaths of the event of “KS”. Danny pissed him off with one too many failed plans and now he’s lost respect for the boy. At this point, it seems ridiculously clear the two are rivals and nothing more. Is it temporary? I don’t know. We’ll have to see, but it’s an interesting take on the two. With Vlad as mayor, he’s gonna make more frequent appearances in the show now that he lives in the same town as Danny’s and I suspect the animosity between the two is going take interesting dives and I eagerly await for how their fates will play out by the time the series finale airs.
Speaking of interesting character development, I officially love Danny again. Well, okay not, I’m not a huge Danny fan, but I learned to like the kid enough to watch him grow and develop over the course of the series which steadily did a good job until sometime between “Micro Management” and “Double Cross my Heart” which was jerk, underdeveloped Danny at heart. It pissed me off. Thankfully, the writers seems to have gotten off the jerky Danny drug and restored him into someone likable again. YES, Danny started the prank which was an immature move on his part, especially to Vlad whom Danny should KNOW at this point that the man will strike when provoked. It’s like poking a sleeping tiger. BUT he exhibited clever intelligence by figuring out nearly all the plans Vlad sneakily uses and generally remaining suspicious of Vlad’s motives throughout the episode. No calmness or “who cares” attitude, no “oh, nothing bad will happen” mode, he was alert the entire time that and that just made me squeal like in his “Pirate Radio” days. And secondly, after all the pranks have been played, Danny flies over to Vlad and APOLOGIZES. He lets go of his pride and sincerely states how sorry he is, proving he is mature enough to accept his mess and apologize for it(now if only Sam herself can do the same every time she shits stuff up). God, I was thrilled like nobody’s business by the time the episode ended. Now let him keep this up for the rest of Season 3 and I won’t have to wooden sword anyone.
This episode is just a treasure trove of characters. Aside from the Vlad/Danny angle, we get some nice scenes with Jack obsessing over his buddy Vlad (poor guy still doesn’t know Vlad’s agenda) and Maddie’s continuous displeasure (first shown in “Secret Weapons”) with Vlad which to me, still makes little sense when she praised him in “Reign Storm”, stating she let “bygones be bygones”. I suppose even she has her pathway of grudge. I mean, it isn’t that easy to forgive a man who tries to get down your married pants. Other characters don’t do much other then act who they are, oh, and I also don’t give a shit for the Guys in White with the only threat I ever consider them being in “Reality Trip”. I have fond wishes that they should have stayed as one-shot characters from their first appearances.
That said, the Guys in White may deem pointless to me, but Vlad’s ghosts aren’t. We’ve known he’s a very powerful foe and one of the few who gives Danny a run for his money. Throughout the ENTIRE series of DP, not once has Danny himself defeated Vlad in combat and I mean honest-to-goodness fist on fist. He had to rely on others to do his task. For “Bitter Reunions”, it was the Fenton RV and blackmail, for “Maternal Instincts”, Specter Deflector/Plasmius Maximus and bunches of mutant ghost beasts, “Million Dollar Ghost”, Jack pwned Vlad, “Reign Storm”, the two’s combat interrupted by Pariah who was both their prime enemy they focused on, “The Ultimate Enemy”…yeah right, “Secret Weapons”, Jazz handled that one, “Masters of All Time” = Maddie ultimately defeated the alternate Vlad there and while Danny DID deliver the kick off to present canon Vlad, he was still weak from Ecto Acne and really, it was more of a throw then a battle, and “Kindred Spirits”? He got smushed by the Specter Speeder, then decked by Dani. Naturally he is a foe to be beckon and with his powers having increased, heck, this episode merely ended more on a draw then anything else. Danny has more trouble up his sleeves; even if the boy himself is growing in strength as well, he has yet to officially do a one-on-one fight against Vlad and win (frankly, this is something I wanna see).
The question I have is that Vlad’s sudden increase in power feels completely out of nowhere. Throughout his other appearances, he’s powers have stayed the same and many fans, including myself have theorized he’s at that age and point where his powers have stopped, he’s reached his peak. How does he’s power increase? The show never states other then Vlad saying it just grew. There is NO theory to back this up, BUT nor is there any to debunk it. Vlad nor the show never said his powers peaked, so we can’t pin that blame, but his powers suddenly jumping up in strength just seemed to come out of nowhere. He turned from being able to create four duplicates to…well, a LOT. Did he hold his powers back out of fear he'd hurt Danny which he never wanted gravely hurt/dead prior to "KS" or what? Well, I guess I won’t complain as much if they emphasize this later down the road and because I have secret desire to wanna see firebendin’ Vlad cuz’ I want a Vlad fire vs. Danny ice, damn it!
The animation is pretty fine on it’s own. Nothing to mull about (although I’ll state seeing Vlad’s powers were cool) except for the hot nakedness of Vlad Masters. GAWD, that was a very good day for me. In short, yes, they were some very eye catching moments indeed and very nicely animated, but not as vibrant as some of the other DP episodes.
Frankly, Season 3’s first episode is off to a very good start. I’ve seen some of the other English episodes of Season 3 and I range a mixed attitude to them, but I need to rewatch them over again to make a more proper decision, but consider this episode as a fine example of what I want for the majority of Season 3. Off to a good start indeed.

I think he was actually holding back his powers in the past. All the time he knew who Danny was and wanted him except at the very beginning, but I think Vlad was basically playing cat and mouse with Danny Phantom. Just playing with him until he destroyed him, but then he found out who he was. After that, he held back because he didn't want to seriously hurt Danny. That would just make it harder to get him. At the point in KS when he might have went all out, he got hit with the Speeder.
So, now that he's full out pissed at Danny, he's no longer holding back which means Danny is gonna be in one heck of a pinch at some point in the future.

One thing though:
Vlad later goes over to the front of City Hall, makes a Reagan sign (Bwahaha),
I think you mean Nixon sign, babe.
