Danny left for Little Madison early in the morning, not even taking Vlad’s car. Vlad figured the boy wanted to have little to do with anything of him and his properties. One can assume he carefully flew there as a result. Fine, Vlad wouldn’t bother Danny, not yet at least. Just wait for him to cool down. He should have counted on how long that would be that even after three days since that outburst, he refused to talk to him and instead gave off glares as his answer.
Vlad finally reacted when on the fourth day, he spotted Danny enter the manor with a black eye.
“Oh, my God, what the hell happened to you?!”
“Nothing.” He muttered, hoping the billionaire would back off. No dice, Vlad immediately ran over to Danny and examined the eye before dragging him to the kitchen.
“I said it was nothing!”
“Don’t be foolish, Daniel. Look at the size of that thing.” Vlad countered, “What in God’s name did you do? Your clothes are wrangled--did you get into an unnecessary fight?”
“No, one of the cows kicked me to a tree.”
“WHAT?”
“I was in ghost mode at that point, trying to use my strength to at least push this one cow who refuse to go to the others and he kicked me. I turned human by the time my face hit the branch of a tree,” Danny explained quickly, “Happy now?”
“No, I am not happy! You got kicked by an animal who has the potential to trample you to death AND you went and gone ghost when there could have been people watching!” Vlad cried out as he raced towards the kitchen and fetched out an ice pack, “Here, this will do for now.”
“I was alone with just the cows, Vlad."
"You could have startled the cows by turning into a ghost. Maybe that's why it kicked you in the first place."
"I’ll live. I’ve had dozens of black eyes. Dash used to beat me up all the damn time.” Danny cried out. He wanted to leave, he wanted to continue his streak of anger towards Vlad, but seeing him gush all over Danny over as something as simple as a black eye made him feel rather special inside. It caused quite the tickling sensation in his stomach. NO! Damn it, no! He lied to you; you still can’t HAVE A CRUSH ON HIM!
“Honestly, stop acting like such a spoiled child.” Vlad continued.
“STOP mothering me! You’re not my dad OR my mom!”
“I’m trying to help and if that means mothering you--”
“You don’t even respect my own mom! Going about talking sweet things to her even after her death! What? Did YOUR mom not give you any loving or what?”
“My mother is none of your business!”
“Just like how my mother isn’t as well!” And with that, he stormed off. Stupid! Stupid!
Vlad watched in frustration as the one person keeping him from going insane from loneliness walked off. He had enough of this, so much so that he walked over to the nearest phone and called the one person he vowed to never call.

By the time Danny left for the Masters’ farm (avoiding Sue whenever he thought he spotted her), he halted upon entrance when he saw Vlad’s familiar black convertible. Surely it could just be another car that looked the same. Zooming in on the license plate which read “PACKERSV”, Danny left off a groan. No, why is he here? Danny got his rather surprising answer when Vlad suddenly walked over, donned in complete cowboy gear, Abraham behind him with a rather mixed face.
“…You’ve got to be kidding me.” Danny spoke in horror.
“Daniel, meet your new partner for the rest of the cow herding.” Abe said, almost in a proud manner despite his face stating otherwise. It seemed he’s reaction and mannerisms were more confusion then anything else. Vlad, not giving a second glance at his father took a black horse and rode atop it.
“Come on, Daniel. Time’s a-wastin”.
Danny reluctantly grabbed his horse and trailed behind, wondering what's more terrifying, Vlad as his new partner or the fact that he said, “Time’s a-wastin”.
Concentrating on herding cows and trying to ignore Vlad whenever he offered helpful suggestion, Danny eyed how even after twenty years, Vlad still demonstrated excellence in his farm work. He could still deny it for all he can, but his experience as a cowboy never left his mind. Other then that observation, Danny felt he did a successful enough job ignoring him.
Come rest time however, Vlad immediately walked over to Danny and sat by him under the shade of the same tree Danny’s been sitting under since he started this gig. Danny instinctively faced the other way to eat in peace.
“Daniel,” Silence after, “Daniel, please. I had to do what I had to. I couldn’t very well tell the interviewers we had animosity between the two, now could we?”
“Sure you could.” His tone bordered on sarcasm, knowing Vlad to be right.
“Oh, yes, once we DO tell them how much we physically and emotionally struggled against each other, let them ask WHY we did? We can just tell them we’re half ghosts!” Now Vlad, too turned sarcastic.
“W-We can’t tell them that.” Danny suggested.
“Exactly. People will assume I’m some abusive adopted father and the moment they’d get word I took you in, child service would take you away,” Vlad pointed out, “Is that what you want? Do you want to be taken away? DO YOU?”
“…No.” Danny mumbled, having started to develop tears as Vlad bluntly spoke.
“I don’t want to either.” Vlad softened his tone.
“…But you told them how you and mom met between the twenty years you actually did encounter for the first time since college. Why did you lie on that? Do you still think even in death she’d love you?!”
“True, I admit that went a bit further then I normally wanted. Maddie’s death is just as hard on me as it on you, Daniel. I love her.”
“Don’t you mean loved?”
“No…Love…at least, for now. I don’t know.”
“You don’t have any respect for me or my mom for saying stupid crap like that. What is wrong with you?”
“Don’t start that again!”
“Then leave me alone!” Danny shoved Vlad away and turned his gaze over to the plains. Stupid! Stupid! I have a crush on him, but I’m equally pissed at him? What the hell is the matter with me?! An awkward silence fell.
“Same age…”
“What?” Danny peeked over his shoulder.
“You were ten when you started to detach from your mother. You told me one time a year back, remember?”
“So?”
“…I was ten when my mother died.”
Danny’s reaction remained silent, but intrigued as he kept facing over to Vlad.
“She made me feel special when times were less then pleasing. Overprotective and smothering, but all in the name of love. My father wasn’t nearly as harsh when she was alive fore even she could put a smile on that hardass’ face. Then I noticed her growing weaker and weaker, her smiling fading each day. I was ten…when my mother died," Vlad concluded after, “I have fine respect for mothers. I have respect for yours and I am sorry if I offended you in many ways. Love is never an easy force to conquer.”
Tell me about it. Danny though to himself, then he blushed again.
“Moving on is hard for me as well, but at least we can both agree we care for Maddie.” Vlad urged a smile, one that Danny merely nodded to as he turned to face him front to front, “The last thing I want to do is lose you.” With that he gently placed his arm around Danny’s shoulder.
Oh, man, oh, man, oh man! Danny took a big gulp of air when he found himself having difficulties breathing correctly.
“I’ve lost so many people in my life whom I care so much for--even Jack if you’re curious. The last person I want to lose is you.”
“…Really?” He asked, even though how blatant obvious that comment was.
“Yes. Daniel, right now, you are my everything. The very reason I get up in the morning and go to sleep at night in comfort is knowing you’re safe in bed.” And with that, Vlad gently kissed Danny on the side of his forehead. A fatherly gesture on his side, but for Danny, his heart skipped a beat, then thumped rapidly, “I love you, Daniel.”
If the current situation didn’t already mangled with his emotions, that comment did as at that very moment, he fainted.
