Chapter Five. Danny tries to figure out why he likes Vlad, but something comes up that could ruin that thought...
_______________________
“He’s a lying manipulative snake. He tried to kill my father far too many times to count and get down my mother’s pants despite her happy marriage with dad. He had no qualms killing my sister, friends, or anyone to get what he wants. H-He’s an evil…jerk.” Herding cows alone for the first time until Abe found him a partner, Danny concentrated on the pros and cons of one Vlad Masters after letting the cows graze. So far, both options seemed dead evil.
“So why do I like him so much?" He whined to himself, "He took me in and treated me kindly. I mean, I of all people asked to live with him as well, but he was the only one who could understand my pain. I mean, I couldn’t tell Aunt Alicia or anyone in my family I’m half ghost…but why did I wanted to confess all my sorrow to Vlad? Maybe I was desperate.” Danny, settle himself under the shade of a tree, blocking the sun from forcing any more heat he needed in this summer weather, eating lunch during the grazing.
Taking a bite out of his sandwich, he continued debating himself, “And surprisingly, he wasn’t a jerk. He didn’t even take advantage of me. Well, later on anyways, who knew what he tried to do earlier? What if he only played the nice card just so he could get me to warm up to him later on, get me to accept adoption?” Danny let off a groan.
“But he never asked me later on. He just helped me. He was kind to me--is still kind to me. I haven’t even heard anything on him doing anything dastardly. Did he change his ways just for my sake or is he waiting till I’m fully recovered to put his full plan into motion? No…mom and dad are gone. He wanted mom and me, that was his primary goal. He can’t get mom and he has me…sort of. OH! This is crazy!” Danny lied down until the back of his head touched the grass, giving him small tickling sensations, but he’s mind filled with too much on the subject of Vlad for him to position himself in a more comfortable manner.
“I don’t understand it. This man put me through so much trauma, yet I blush every single damn time I see him! I’m not suppose to have a crush on him, he’s WAY older then me--old enough to be my father!” Danny buried his face with his hands. He calmed himself until his mind dug deep into his memories and fished out Vlad’s wet hair moment which quickly gave way to the day Danny saw his full package when he helped him bathe. Immediately he’s face turned bright red which he quickly covered up with his cowboy hat despite his only company being that of bovines. It helped little as the image kept replaying over and over inside his head like a broken record. His stomach flipped and his chest tightened as he tried in vein to keep his hands from playing with himself.
NO! Why do I have to be attracted to him? What did he do to get me to like him? He’s been good to me, yeah, that could be it…could me seeing him naked…just triggered it off?

Danny returned home constantly smelling like the entirety of the animals in the Masters’ farm rolled over him as he smelled something not so much like garbage, but equally disturbing. Enough so that Vlad ordered him to go the nearest shower and wash himself off without hesitation or he swore he’d used the Plasmius Maximus on him, gag and tie him, then toss him into the Ghost Zone. Danny wasn’t sure if he was serious or not, but considering what Vlad was capable off; he would immediately head for the showers without question. Quite frankly, if he cared less about hygiene, he’d keep the smell for it certainly grew on him, however gross it was. Danny admitted that farm life manage to provide such a satisifying air that he seriously considered taking it up as a future career should he's goals as an astronaut debunks. He’d figured Vlad would have at least been in tune with such the smell or familiarize himself with it considering his manor wasn’t that far from Little Madison and he once lived that rugged life, if he hadn’t already proven to be such a pompous being.
“Honestly, Daniel, do you roll around dirt with the pigs or something? I honestly still disapprove of your job in a farm, but my father’s of all places.”
“Then why do you let me go still?”
“I can tolerate it as long as it makes you happy…and provided you don’t feel the need to brag about my father towards me.”
“I’ve never had any intention of doing that.”
“Anything you compliment him, you do.”
“Oh, for crying out loud.”
“Honestly, what the hell have you been doing for the past several days to make you reek that badly? Smells like…cows.”
“Hmm, so you still have a little cowboy in you. Yeah, grandpa got me herding cows.”
"By yourself?"
"He's finding someone for me."
“Oh, Lord, why is that man trying to endanger--wait--GRANDPA?”
“Yeah, he told me to call him that.” And with that said, Danny left to draw a shower, leaving Vlad stunned.
Danny only had to work on the weekdays (Abe handled the weekends) so he spent the better half of Saturday relaxing. In his case, he’d mostly watch television or go online, although having done that for two years living in Vlad’s manor when he spent hours alone due to emotional trauma made those activities lose it’s appeal, so he has since lessen such hobbies. Besides, he already grew sick and tired of the pointless spam and condolences flooding his e-mail. Recently though, he took it upon himself to wander into Vlad’s vast library and heavy forbid, read a book.
He had already absorbed half of “Great Expectations” when the doorbell rang. Hardly anyone comes by the Masters’ manor (not since Vlad banned any delivery men from entering his manor bringing about the umpteeth item from concerned strangers who assume their gifts would please the then grieving Danny, one can only take too many basket of flowers) causing Danny to turn invisible and phase his head out the wall next to the double doors to see who it was, relieved to find it only the delivery man. Opening the door, the slightly pudgy, yet optimistic looking man held a thin package in one hand, clipboard in another.
“Hello, little boy, is Mr. Masters home?”
Little? Danny was taller then him!
“No,” he spoke in a soft, yet annoyed tone, “I can help, I live with him.”
“Oh--OH, Danny Fenton! Oh, geez, I heard about your story, I’m so sorry about what happened to you a couple of years back,” The man gasped.
“Sir, is that package for Vlad?” He asked, his voice rising a little.
“Oh, yes…and since he apparently isn’t here--”
“He’s at an emergency meeting.”
“Oh, well, can you sign this then?”
Danny took the clipboard and pen and signed his name in haste. The man handled him the package, gave off a friendly tip with his hat and left.
A package. The weight and rectangular feel of it suggested it to be a book, maybe a thick magazine. Should he wait until Vlad returned? Danny never caught Vlad receiving any packages from delivery men prior to him moving in with Vlad, so he raised suspicion on whatever could be inside. No, Vlad hasn’t done anything bad since that incident, not to my knowledge anyways. I should give him the benefit of the doubt…should I?
Minutes of pondering eventually had Danny tearing open the package and out popped, indeed, a magazine. A magazine with Vlad’s face plastered on the front cover. How relieved Danny was that he let out a chuckle (he suddenly remembered Vlad stating he’d be interviewed a couple of months back) while eyeing the man’s cheeky grin on front. A sexy cheeky grin.
“Oh, God.” Danny let off another blush and smacked the magazine facedown on the nearby coffee table he wandered himself to. His fickle hands however immediately reached for it where he started skimming through the pages until he got to Vlad’s article which mostly dealt with his life and how he came to be that way. Danny’s interest mostly were glued to the various images of Vlad either standing perfectly still or in serene poses. One could even say he looked peaceful and not as burdensome Danny often found him to be. His interest in the worded text came when he read Vlad’s interview and the subject came to Danny himself.
“Since you’ve taken in the former orphan Danny Fenton as your son, how do you feel with his presence affecting your general life you’ve kept the same years before? How do you precisely know him?” The magazine interviewer asked.
“Well, as I've stated in previous interviews before, I’ve known his parents whom I’ve met during my days at the University of Wisconsin. Jack was always quite the goofball, but Maddie, now she was a delight. Although she’s always a delight. Long story short, they had a son, Daniel whom I have gotten close to over the years. The boy looked up to me so much, almost like a second father.”
“What?” Danny gasped. He read on.
“Oh, he would always come to me since the two or so years I’ve known him, asking for advices and whatnot. Bright, growing boy, he is. I felt an instant connection with him as much as I did his mother.”
Danny couldn’t believe this; Vlad was lying about how he felt for him?
“We’ve been hearing you speak of Maddie often and how close you were to him. I presume the subject of her death provided much discomfort for you?”
“Yes, yes. The memory of Maddie will never leave me, but I can always remember her through past memories. The two of us shared such a wonderful time together. We’ve met every so often between the twenty years since graduation and now.”
“No, she didn’t!” Danny cried out, despite the empty household, provided the Dairy King wasn’t listening anywhere near.
The rest of the interview dealing with Danny and Maddie didn’t flair well as this man fed the interviewer more false information into her brain. He couldn’t believe what he was reading. He thought that even after two years, Vlad would get over his undying love for his mother and stop putting words in his mouth. He appreciate him making up false stories years back, but he suffered too much emotions to care or do anything about it and it certainly did save him from making a public embarrassment of himself by going on countless live appearances on stage, but the fact that Vlad felt the need to continue this charade with the boy now well and healthy infuriated him.
The front door opened and Danny quickly lifted his head up. He slowly walked over to see Vlad clear across the other side, the older being having stopped the moment he eyed Danny.
"I'm home. You looked worried. The meeting went well, if you must know. I have to host a dinner party for a company I'm trying to acquire sometime during Christmas. That gives me several months to prepare and get any further information," Vlad ranted on, "Oh…I see my article has arrived...you opened my mail without me?"
“You sick freak! Just when I thought fondly of you, you go and still pull crap like this!” Danny tossed the magazine until it slid down to Vlad’s feet.
“Daniel?”
“Even if mom’s dead, she’d NEVER have feelings for you, so get over it! And I DID NOT admire YOU when I was 14! Any mutual respect I had for you back then was non existent by the time I found you tried to axe my dad and get all perverted with mom!”
“Daniel, listen to me. I had to say something reasonable and plausible enough that--”
“NO!” Danny turned the other direction to storm to his room, "This is why I can't TRUST YOU!"
When he reached his room, he slammed the door, collapsed on his bed, and then took a big sigh. Eyeing the photo of his parents, sister, and friends, he quickly scanned to his mother before bursting into tears. True, it hurted what Vlad did, but even more so that he yelled at him, loosening any chance he could ever hope to have of him. And the fact that he thought that during this moment of even worse crisis then a stupid crush made him want to puke.
