*SPOiLER WARNiNG: Seriously, if you guys haven't seen this episode or have not seen Season 3 of DP, I advise you to move along, not unless you wanna be spoiled. This review will eventually be my website and is in my DA journal as well.

That said, enjoy my review for "Girls' Night Out".

I’ve read rumors around various parts of the Internet that this episode would actually deal with Sam and Valerie (and other girls from school apparently) on a camping trip and remembered that I actually raised an eyebrow of intrigue towards it. If they’re putting Sam and Valerie together, that can only mean one thing: the subject matter of Danny. With potentials of the two interacting, I’d have expected by the end their feelings on him would have been resolved or improved or something, perhaps wrap up the Danny/Valerie angle and focus on the Danny/Sam since Season 3 is constantly shoving that anyways. This is what I had hoped for in “Girls’ Night Out”--not…THIS. And just what exactly is this? A completely feminist-ish “I AM FEMALE HEAR ME ROAR” episode and Sam being a complete bitch. So therefore, all I can say is…

…Actually, you know what, I better start on the good since the bad is gonna be a lot of ranting coming from yours truly. Are there any good? Oh, yes, the Danny subplot and the animation. This is pretty much the first time Danny's recieved second billing in the show, taking a back-sit for others. I actually made a mention of this in my “Bitter Reunions” review (located in my website) that I would love to see the secondary characters in the limelight with Danny appearing little or not at all. I’ll say one thing, while the secondary characters failed big time, Danny didn’t. He’s story is simple: Skulker hunts Danny to prove to his chick he ain’t a bad hunter all as Danny keeps his pops from discovering he is Phantom. The writer managed to squeeze in a solid plot that doesn’t muck up the overall main story (in fact, this episode has solid pacing) and finish it on a good note, namely Jack’s fulfillment on gaining that father/son relationship he’s been struggling with since the beginning of this episode proving Kevin Sullivan (the writer of this episode) is better writing about guys then he is of girls. Although not score affecting, I did kinda wished Jack mentioned that “Sam” ring since he was on that one subject about her.

Animation is beautiful in terms of color. Lots of eye candy, especially the backgrounds and skies. It’s actually pretty interesting that during most of Amity Park's surroundings, the background retains a sort of pinkish appearance, perhaps as an ode to the fact that women are walking all over the damn place. I have to say, when it comes to background colors, DP excells greatly. I also didn’t mind whenever I saw Ember, Spectra, and Kitty all on the same screen since the three of them alone provides vibrant colors together without any sign of awkward eye cringing. All the fighting scenes were well handled (Danny getting smacked to that rock when Skulker blasted him really got me to cringe and cry out “OUCH!” which is hard to do in animation, so kudos to the drawing team) and I really did love it when Sam revealed herself as a girl to the Ghost Gals, that was pretty sexy (heck, I admit that Sam as a boy is pretty sexy, it really fits her, actually); even the occasional gloomy grays of Lake Eerie feels colorful, showing that the animation in whole can make up for some of the loopholes (Why is Jack sleeping by the time the second half starts when logically, he shouldn’t be, seriously, even the colors switch from dull gray to bright pink, WTF?). Even if I made a big deal on animation error, it pales in comparison to the overall tone of this damn episode.

I don’t care about feminism. I like strong women as much as the next gal and I like that girls can do whatever the shit they want to do, but I’m not a fan of it. Incidentally, I also don’t care for masculinity, I tend to like equal gender opportunity. Chivalry is dead, people, but both genders can treat each other with respect. And quite frankly, we’ve already dealt with gender issues before in “Teacher of the Year” and “Beauty Marked".

But if Hartman's crew wanted to make a feminist episode, they couldn’t kill for a better reason other then possessing boyfriend grudges? Oh, Kitty wants all men gone cuz' Johnny sucks, so she just washes away the problem by blowing them away with a kiss. I mean, NOW? How is this any different from the 1,001 arguments she gets with Johnny? And Ember’s entrance, while dealing with the same level as Kitty is random since we’ve NEVER been given any hint on a Skulker/Ember pairing before this. Are we suddenly suppose to expect them to be a couple without any provided hints, clues, or knowing that they had feelings for one another? If this suited well with their personalities, I could have forgiven the out of place context of their relationship, but guess what, it doesn’t and in the end, I just felt bamboozled. And no, those gazillion and one fan pairings of Skulker and Ember doesn't count. Oh, and let’s add Spectra for no apparent reason. The latter I suppose I have to take for granted since there really aren’t a lot of female ghosts to choose from: Lunch Lady? Wouldn’t fit the type. Desiree? With her ability to wish anything (including men away) the chances would be TOO easy. Lydia? Only loyal to Freakshow. Dora? Perhaps, she did have a grudge against her brother and lived in a male dominated society and with her new added gumption; this would be a chance to show off her new personality. Actually…Dora’s story could potentially work and does sound more interesting, certainly better then random pop ups, but I suppose it, too was nixed since she’s not really that big of a villain, so I’ll forgive the random choosing of Spectra. I just wish they better explained WHY she was hanging around with the two and their boyfriend problems when she has nothing to relate to other then stating men suck. Not even a small psychology help scene which could have made a big difference on my opinion of her joining. In the end, I suppose they just needed a third chick to round up the heroes’ three, although I REALLY rather prefer Valerie then Maddie, if not because of better character development (like that camping trip one mentioned above) since Mrs. Fenton really didn’t add anything more then we already knew of her. I’m aware this could have been a potential intention to show her in another spotlight, but what worked in “Maternal Instincts” doesn’t here. I'll ask again, where the HELL is Valerie?

That said, I do applaud Kevin Sullivan’s attempted first writing on DP by giving the three Ghost Girls some amount of chemistry with each other to at least make them work. And at least he chose characters from previous episodes we know and love instead of randoming creating new personality-less ones that Season 3 is unfortunately plaqued with.

Kitty’s powers itself is quite something, too making me wonder if she’s done this to Johnny before or is something she gained recently (since she doesn‘t seem to fully understand it yet). It’s a good concept, but it fails on deliverance because I kept wanting to know just where the men disappeared off to. Shouldn’t a simple scene with Johnny mulling over with Dash or Kwan or some random human guy in whatever hellhole they were teleported to be justified? It certainly would have added a lot to her power and emphasize the doomed fate on the males until Sam, Jazz, and Maddie rolled by. We don’t even SEE Johnny returning by episode’s end, but I can assume he does since he’s back by “Livin’ Large”. I also swear I never want to hear Ember’s crappy generic song in that episode again. It can’t ever match up to the brilliance of “Remember”. Not since Generation O’s crappy “Girls Rule, Boys Drool” song have I’ve been so irritated on gender popping cartoon music.

Unfortunately it seemed the writer also had absolutely no clue on how to make Sam and Jazz work either. Sam hates Jazz butting in and Tucker, who briefly appears on screen seems to share that dislike, too before he vanishes away (poor Tuck, always getting cut off), he’s just more quiet about it, causing the Goth chick to dominate the bitch angle. Honestly, such potential great character interaction turned non-existence because 1. Sam’s bitchery, which I’ll get to in a minute and 2. Lack of coherent evidence of animosity between the two. Sam and Jazz prior to this episode barely had ANY screen time to one another to ensure they--at least Sam--were irritated with one another, so any of their contact on screen felt so put of place that I found it completely unbelievable. Jazz’s personality is fine and ties in greatly with her "Secret Weapon” persona which, unlike many, I NEVER actually had a problem with sans a few over the top moments, but I swear this must have been the writer’s excuse to further commence bitchiness toward Sam.

Sam’s got a lively personality where she speaks about what she believes in. I like that it’s a way to prove she can be a strong woman without pushing the boundaries of feminism on me (well, not unless Sam brings up that subject--which thankfully IS rare) and I wager I got used to her bitchy nature because I could relate, I AM a bitch, too and I’m certainly doing it right now as of this writing. She’s certainly an interesting character with great potentials, but considering how far this episode is in the show, the lack of any development on Sam’s character at this point have caused me to frustrate over her nagging tones. One of the great things about DP is the character development: Jazz became more into ghosts and learned to embrace her age, Valerie turned from self centered rich jerk to ghost hunting super woman with concerns for others then herself, and Danny, despite often losing it at times, have gained far more maturity over the course of the series, so why the hell is that Sam, a character who has appeared in every single episodes sans “Bitter Reunions” STILL be the same chick since the beginning of the show baring her romance life in mind? Is it too much to ask to make her at least less off an ass by this point? Can’t she, like Danny, mature and learn to LET GO OFF THINGS and find her forced beliefs on others is not the way to go? In fact, can’t she be like who she was at the ending of “Parental Bonding” where she actually LEARNED to let go? How can a girl of such potential be wasted? I’m just sick and tired of Sam’s jerkass mode. There should be no excuse to constantly fit her with it at this point. She should have changed, but at this rate, I doubt I’ll ever see this.

Like Hartman before in “Infinite Realms”, this is Kevin Sullivan’s first writing in this show (as far as I know), so he made an effort, and to his credit, at least he didn’t direct every episode of his own show only to write and not get his own characters right. In fact, he actually did do a good job fitting the characters personality baring the flaws I pointed out above. It’s just, if he wanted to work feminist right, I wished he’d done it in a better manner. I don’t know about the rest of you DP chicks, but I'm moving as far, far away from this episode as possible. For now, if it weren’t for the fact “Boxed Up Fury” existed, this episode would have been a strong contender for worst Season 3 episode ever, but it is a close second.
4.5/10

Oh, and am I the only one who thinks of THIS Pokemon: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Loudred whenever I see the Maddie Modulator?

Few things

(cause GNO is currently my fav episode of season 3)

Kitty getting powers: I LIKED the concept of Kitty having powers. Only because it made her worth more than the whiney bitchy girlfriend. (which let's face it, every episode she's been in, she is...and I agree, she still is in this one too.) I think the kiss idea was cool, although, yeah, why she hasn't totally zapped Johnny out of her life is puzzling.

Johnny and Danny scene: I actually liked this one. It seems Johnny is slowly starting to 'respect' Danny, and really only 'messing' with him, Danny once again proving he can hold his own.

Teamups: Kitty, Ember, and Spectra work. Now, I agree, I think getting a few other fems involved Desiree and Dora, would have made the mix a bit more interesting honestly. I think them as a team works MUCH better than the our 'human team'. Their whole reason seemed lame. I wrote a fanfiction with this exact concept (i'll have to dig it out), so I was intrigued by this idea...but...yeah, the whole "we're doing it cause we hate men?" Why not do it cause...The girl ghosts could so totally outmatch most of the guys? O.o

Human Team
OK, while I am happy with character development in Jazz (answering my problems I had with her in the whole Vlad episodes where she 'fights' Danny), I agree, my original 'back off and let danny do his thing' really should have been done.

Maddie is kick-ass nomatter WHO she fights with. So, actually Maddie's parts I didn't mind.

Sam...gawd. OK, first off, I completely agree with your assessment of the Sam and Jazz thing. WHERE did that come from. Sam's role in this episode was lame...

Valerie SHOULD have been in this episode. 'Nuff said.

I liked Danny with his dad moments, I thought those were cute and endearing.

Skulker and Ember: Somehow, I thought you'd be more 'yay!' about this. I don't think it's too 'out there' as them as a couple, but I do agree, I think that it is coming out of nowhere and just a shock factor for this episode.

Also, this episode seems to make ghost girls as bitchy...and WHY do they want to possess all the females again? What's the point in that?

I still ENJOYED the episode...just mainly to see how Ember, Spectra, and Kitty developed as characters...Its nice to see Maddie isn't as clueless when it comes to events in the Amity Park as you think...not to mention her on the cooking show was awesome.

Two more points.

Sam dressing in drag
I had the idea of Susan swapping with Danny tons of times before THIS happened.

The other thing, fanartists are called 'anti-fans' for dressing Danny in drag...but then the show turns around and does it?...how does this make sense?

"Kitty getting powers: I LIKED the concept of Kitty having powers. Only because it made her worth more than the whiney bitchy girlfriend."

I liked it, too, I just wished they'd showed us where the men went, is all. Would have added a lot.

"Teamups: Kitty, Ember, and Spectra work. Now, I agree, I think getting a few other fems involved Desiree and Dora, would have made the mix a bit more interesting honestly."

I never said that. I said why did they chose Spectra instead of another female to form a trio, not adding more chicks to the mix. It's that Spectra came completely out of nowhere. While Ember and Kitty are together through boyfriend issues, Spectra appeared out of nowhere and was probably placed there as an excuse to form a trio against the human chicks.

What makes you think I'd go 'yay'? What vibe did I give off to indicate that?

"Also, this episode seems to make ghost girls as bitchy...and WHY do they want to possess all the females again? What's the point in that?"

Well, the female humans would retaliate back or complain that the men are gone. The Ghost Gals didn't want that, now did they?

"the other thing, fanartists are called 'anti-fans' for dressing Danny in drag...but then the show turns around and does it?...how does this make sense?"

From what I gather, True-Fans take a lot of Anti-Fan stuff out of context, even if it appeared in the show (I heard of one true fan who likened Danny's underwear scene in "Urban Jungle" as "toilet humor" and completely inappriorate, making it sounded like it was porn or something)...so the Anti-Fans counter back. It's like an endless cycle.

True, it WOULD have. It felt rather anti-climatic. I mean..the outcome for this episode...we KNEW all the men would come back, just not HOW. @.@;; *sigh* You're right..this episode wasn't the best amazing feat of writing there is within the series.

My bad. I thought you had. ^_^;; Maybe because Spectra just has this strong independent woman quality about her? I mean..Betrand practically IS her 'bitch boy'. Agreed though, Spectra DID appear out of nowhere with this...probably right, Desiree coming in and complaining about her former love affairs would have made more sense.

What makes you think I'd go 'yay'? What vibe did I give off to indicate that?

So, Skulker's ex in CP isn't Ember then? That's what I was thinking. O.o With the mention of the dark girlfriend with the voice etc.

Very very true.

"Desiree coming in and complaining about her former love affairs would have made more sense."

Desiree is a good choice, but wouldn't work since with the ability to easily wish away stuff, it would be too easy. So that's why I also thought of Dora in my review and the pros on how she can fit, but also wouldn't by stating the con.

"So, Skulker's ex in CP isn't Ember then? That's what I was thinking. O.o With the mention of the dark girlfriend with the voice etc."

She is, but is only meant for story purposes and his budding crush on Sam since the two are so alike in many ways. In reality, I care little for the Skulker/Ember pairing. Trust me, not everything I do in CP reflects what I like. If that was the case, Dani would be mishandled (she's the only DP character I dislike immensely), Spongebob or even FOP wouldn't be cameoed since I dislike those shows, and etc.
